August 21st:


Hot temperatures to finish out the week today with highs hitting near 100. There is potential for severe weather in the northern part of the listening area, mostly in Nebraska, including McCook. If severe weather comes in, it will most likely be after sunset. Saturday will be slightly cooler with highs in the lower 90's. Chances for showers and thunderstorms come back into the forecast Saturday night, leading into lows in the mid 60's. Sunday will also have mostly sunny skies with highs in the lower 90's. Hot temperatures are expected to return Monday before chances for rain enter the forecast again. Overnight lows over the next few days will remain in the mid 60's.

Gem Hog Roast
On Wednesday, August 26th the Gem Lions invite the community to join them for their annual Hog Roast at the Gem Community Building with service from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Free will donations with net proceeds benefiting community betterment projects, sight programs and education. Tennis Car Wash
Saturday, August 22 - Colby High Schools Boys & Girls Tennis will be having their 13th Annual Car Wash from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kansas Quick Wash for a free will donation.

Ice Cream Social on Sunday, August 23rd
The Colby Rowdy Grannies will be hosting a Back to School Ice Cream Social from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Fike Park. Free will donation encouraged, all proceeds go to support students. Bring your own chair. In case of rain, it will be held at the American Legion.

In St. Francis:
The St. Francis Lions Club invites you to play bingo on the second and fourth Saturday of the month. 122 West Washington. $10 buys 12 games.  Doors open at 6:00 and bingo starts at 7:00.  Come see if luck is on your side.  Come out for good laughs and a guaranteed good time!

In Atwood:
Rawlins County Museum in Atwood will be open every Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
beginning May 24. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Food Pantry
The Rawlins County Food Pantry located at 5Ten Main is regularly open from 4 to 6 p.m. every Thursday afternoon. Come to the alley entrance. Donations are welcome then also.

Virtual Author Talk on Thursday, August 27
Pioneer Memorial will be having this talk at 1:00 p.m. Lucy Foley will be discussing her latest gripping novel set in a remote mountain lodge. "Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel." People can join in person at the library or register from their own device and watch at home. The video is recorded, so if you have registered to watch on your own and cannot attend, a recording will be sent automatically.

Independence Day - America's 250th Birthday Festivities

Free Hot Dog and Watermelon Feed! 

Saturday, July 4th at the 4-H Building at the Thomas County Fairgrounds. This event has bingo, music and entertainment! Sponsored by the Colby High Plains Lions Club with assistance from the Colby Rotary Club and Boy Scout Troop 140.

Firework Display in Colby
The Kiwanis Club sponsored Fireworks Display is scheduled for 10 p.m. at the Thomas County Fairgrounds!

Colby Community Band to Perform July 5th at Fike Park in Colby at 7 p.m. The free performance will feature patriotic music marking the historic milestone. Those attending are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy an evening in the park. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved indoors to the Frahm Theatre at Colby Community College. Updates regarding the location will be posted on social media closer to the event.

The Prairie Museum to Observe Americas 250th
with the community with a "sharing the Spirit of America" celebration on July 8th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. With a public reading of the Declaration of Independence, a flag presentation and a community potluck dinner! This program is part of a nationwide initiative to bring communities together to read the Declaration of Independence simultaneously in recognition of celebrating the nations 250th birthday.

Events This Easter

Around Colby:
Kiwanis Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 28th
For children 9 years or younger will be held in Fike Park starting at 10:00 a.m. The annual egg hunt is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Colby Thomas County. Over 2,100 plastic eggs will be filled with coins, candy, chocolates and local business coupons. There are three age divisions that gather in this order:
0-3 years old, 4-6 years old, and 7-9 years old. 
Parents are encouraged to assist younger children in finding the eggs. Families are also encouraged to bring their own baskets/bags to collect and take the eggs home. For information, contact Kiwanis member, Deryl Waldren - 303-349-7403.

TCCF's Random Acts of Kindness Feb 14 - 20

Random Acts of Kindness Week
The Thomas County Community Foundation is celebrating National Random Acts of Kindness week in the hope that you will too! A community challenge has been put together to help encourage kindness. Very simple tasks that will make a difference. Please consider joining TCCF in their efforts to perpetuate kindness!

Saturday - Support a local business or restaurant. Shop small, dine local, or leave a kind review. 

Sunday - Give through donations. Donate food, clothing, supplies or resources to someone or an organization in need.
